After dealing with the attackers, Bocchi, Setta, and Senqi used their usual strategy of poison stacking to trigger massive damage, finally taking down the remaining Lava Lizard.
With this, they had effectively hunted two Lava Lizards in one outing, a huge success.
However, the team’s focus was no longer on the bounty of this hunt.
Senqi rushed to Setta immediately, anxiously asking, “Brother, are you okay?!”
Earlier, she had witnessed Setta being stabbed through the heart, with blood soaking almost his entire hunting outfit.
The hole in his hunting gear was still there, but when her fingers brushed over his skin underneath, she couldn’t find any wound.
Setta was also puzzled, scratching his head. As the one directly involved, he knew better than anyone how fatal that stab had been.
At that moment, Setta thought he was a goner; his vision went black.
When he opened his eyes again, he saw the girl with the pointed face bullying his sister. Filled with rage, he immediately summoned his sand golem and joined the battle.
He hadn’t even had time to think about his miraculous revival until now, when the adrenaline faded and he realized how incredible this was.
And speaking of incredible, an image of Ma Lu immediately popped into Setta’s mind.
“Vice-Captain, it was you who saved me!”
“No, you were just lucky. Even with 【Resurrection】, I can't guarantee I can bring you back again.”
Ma Lu spoke honestly; he hadn’t expected the purple blessing 【Resurrection】 he acquired earlier would actually come into play.
And Setta’s luck was indeed remarkable—he hit the 33% chance of resurrection. In contrast, some people, like Ma Lu himself, needed four shots just to trigger 【Headshot】 once. It was a case of incredibly bad luck.
“So it really was you who saved me!”
Setta was now completely won over by Ma Lu. He had always thought he was brave and unafraid of death.
However, when that moment truly arrived, he realized how scared he was. He feared dying would leave his father without money for medicine and worried someone would bully his sister.
Thankfully, it wasn’t the heavens, but Ma Lu, who gave him another chance at life.
Setta took off a beast tooth necklace from around his neck, held it out to Ma Lu, and said earnestly, “I don’t have much money, so I can only offer this as a token of my gratitude. Of course, I will always remember this life-saving grace!”
“Huh? No, no, that’s not necessary.” Ma Lu waved his hand.
But Setta was determined and insisted on giving him the beast tooth necklace. “This was passed down from my grandfather to my father, and then to me. It’s said to be linked to the location of a hidden treasure.”
Upon hearing this, Ma Lu instinctively looked to his side, but his usual guide, Mai Mai, was busy interrogating the remaining captive.
Fortunately, Bocchi was familiar with the matter. “Legend has it that besides wild beasts, this desert also hides treasures. Those with the key can sense the treasure, and this Earth Dragon Tooth might be one such key.”
“What’s inside the treasure?”
“No one knows.”
“Hmm?”
“I said it’s just a legend,” Bocchi explained. “For at least thirty years, no one in The Giant Screen has found any treasure.”
“So someone found it thirty years ago?”
“It’s said that the leader of the Golden Sword, the first hunting party of The Giant Screen, possessed a treasure. He supposedly used it to establish the Golden Sword, but he never admitted it.”
“I see.”
Since Setta was adamant, Ma Lu eventually accepted the necklace, though he didn’t think much of it.
According to Bocchi, the existence of the treasure was still debated. Besides, unless the treasure was some kind of food ingredient, even if they found it, Ma Lu wouldn’t be able to take it back.
Mai Mai finally finished interrogating the captives and returned with a serious expression.
Ma Lu pointed to the tip of her nose. “Right here.”
Mai Mai casually wiped away the bloodstain with her hand and said, “These guys were indeed plotting against us all along.”
“We haven’t had any conflict with the Sky Hunting Party before, have we?” Bocchi asked.
“They aren’t from the Sky Hunting Party,” Mai Mai shook her head. “They were just impersonating them. The two injured people weren’t part of their group; they were kidnapped on the road, had their legs broken, and were stabbed in the abdomen. They were forced to play along to lower our guard.”
“Who are they, really?”
“Black Horn,” Mai Mai uttered.
The name surprised Bocchi.
“But it’s not the Black Horn Hunting Party specifically targeting us,” Mai Mai continued. “Black Horn has a terrible reputation, and there have always been rumors that their hunters do shady stuff on the side when not out hunting.”
“Someone hired Black Horn to get rid of us,” Bocchi said. “Who?”
“The person I interrogated didn’t know. Black Horn has many members, and he said such deals are usually handled by Vice-Captain Jin Jian. They only take the money and do the job without asking questions to avoid trouble.”
Bocchi frowned.
The Double Sunflower Hunting Party was just a newly established small group; logically, they shouldn’t be targeted like this. After thinking it over, Bocchi could only recall having some conflict with the Treasure Hunting Party recently.
However, hiring Black Horn would require a large sum of money, and the Treasure Hunting Party had just suffered a loss against them, losing their equipment and motorcycles, and were banned from hunting by the guild for three years. They should be strapped for cash.
Could they have borrowed money just to get revenge?
While Bocchi was still pondering, Ma Lu spoke up. “Why don’t we just directly ask Jin Jian about it?”
“Why would Jin Jian honestly tell us anything?”
“Isn’t Mai Mai really good at interrogations?”
“Oh, so you plan to capture Jin Jian? But wouldn’t that mean declaring war on Black Horn? And as for the marshals…” Mai Mai feigned concern, but her eager eyes betrayed her true feelings.
“As long as we do it cleanly, no one will know. Black Horn has been doing dirty work for a long time, and they’ve surely made plenty of enemies.”
Ma Lu had visited this dimension several times and dealt with many people, gradually getting a feel for the way things worked here.
Simply put, the marshals could only manage what happened within the city, but out in this desert, it all came down to who had the stronger fists.
He turned to Bocchi and asked a crucial question, “Based on what you know about Black Horn, after failing this time, will they back off, or will they come after us again?”
Bocchi was persuaded by his question. She knew how Black Horn operated; once they took the money, they wouldn’t just give up.
Failing once only meant they would try again.
Constantly responding to threats would only become more dangerous; it was better to take the initiative.
“What’s your plan?”
“Does Jin Jian often leave the city?” Ma Lu asked.
Bocchi nodded. “Black Horn is still a hunting party, and despite doing shady jobs on the side, they look no different from other hunting parties on the surface.”
“Then keep an eye on his movements. If he leaves the city before I get back, help me prepare some fresh ingredients. We’ll have a surprise waiting for him,” Ma Lu said with a calm tone.
